Top 5 Reasons to Quit Sugar
We get it, it really tastes good. But sugar is NOT your friend – and you know this too, right?
You know that regular consumption of sugary foods is one of the worst things that you can do for your health. That’s why you’re tinkering with the idea of just getting off that stuff.
Still need some motivation?
Look at all the amazing things that will happen to you when you quit sugar:
1. You become happier (seriously!)
Have you ever heard of winter blues? And sugar blues?
While the first blues occurs because of the lack of sunshine (and vitamin D as a result), the sugar blues is a scientifically proven condition similar to depression.
Studies show that a high-sugar diet leads to sadness, anxiety and depression. Sugar messes with your brain in many ways, for example it effects serotonin levels — the “happy” hormone that controls your mood, sleep patterns, self-esteem, ability to make decisions aaaand… cravings!
2. You’ll drastically reduce the risk of cancer and diabetes.
Sugar consumption has been linked to cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Sugar is the main “food” of cancer cells. It suppresses the immune system, and also makes it hard for vitamins to get absorbed.
120 years ago, only 3 people out of 100,000 had diabetes. Today it’s 8,000 out of every 100,000 people. Interestingly, our sugar consumption increased in the same rate.
3. You’ll lose weight
Fructose (the most widely used form of sugar) tricks the body into gaining weight by fooling your metabolism. It turns off the appetite-control system, it doesn’t appropriately stimulate insulin, which in turn does not suppress ghrelin (the “hunger hormone”) and doesn’t stimulate leptin (the “satiety hormone”).
The result? You eat more, your metabolism can’t keep up, and you gain weight. Not cool.
When you quit sugar, you quickly lose a lot of fluids, and then your body will adjust back to its optimal condition. If you were overweight, this means you will lose fat.
4. You will look younger
Sugar breaks down the collagen in your skin, which will look thinner and more wrinkly, and it will also be more prone to environmental and UV damage.
Glucose consumption also increases production of destructive free radicals. Free radicals cause inflammation and speed up the aging process.
So no sugar equals… yes, you are right: slower ageing, healthier, firmer and more elastic skin.
5. You’ll have more energy. A LOT more.
When you consume sugar it gives you a temporary high, but after the insulin spike comes the glucose crash – making you feel exhausted.
When you quit sugar your blood sugar level becomes more stable, and so does your energy level. Also, now your cell metabolism can function better which in turn gives you a lot more energy you’ve had before. Yay!
